We have all heard about goal setting throughout our lives, but how many of us have actually sat down and have taken 10 min to set realistic goals for ourselves? I know I used to roll my eyes at this, I would think meh, as long as I’m doing a little bit better than last year I’m fine, or I wouldn’t set any goals because I was afraid that if I didn’t reach them I would be disappointed in myself. I hate disappointing others much less myself. However with streaming I knew what I wanted my end goal to be. I want partnership! I want an amazing core family group! I want to have fun! So, I set a few small goals for myself before I would allow myself to give up on streaming in case it didn’t work out for me.
- Make and keep a schedule
- Play new games that you wouldn’t normally play
- Greet everyone who talks in your channel
- Focus on the chat more than the game
- Form a core viewer group of 10 people
- Have 500 followers
- Stream for 6 months
- If you are still having fun stream another 6 months (total of 1 year)
Those were my simple goals. I had no idea what to expect, how to achieve it, no one to help guide me, I did everything on my own. If you guys see where I am now (1.5 years of streaming) I still keep my schedule, I sometimes play games outside of my comfort zone, I focus on my chat and make sure I greet everyone who says hi in the channel. (Note: I DON’T call out lurkers!) My core viewer group is a solid 20 viewers or ‘Crusaders’ as I like to call them and I have almost 1,500 followers. I am doing very well, but I know I can do better. Not because I’m selfish, but because I know I can put in more effort towards this. I’m a firm believer that you will get out what you put into things. So I will be setting goals for myself and checking up on them throughout the year to keep myself on track.
So let’s break this down and let’s start with defining a “goal”. A goal is when you identify something you want and are willing to stick with a course of action to achieve it. This is different from “values” because values are something that is important but doesn’t have a specific course that you can follow to achieve it. For example: you can value being an entertaining streamer and make choices that will help you achieve it, but a goal would be having a core group of 10 because I am an entertaining streamer. Now you have something attainable as opposed to just an “idea”.
So let’s take a few minutes now and let’s do this together! I’m serious.. I’ll wait for you.... open up a document, get your notebook, WRITE THIS DOWN! Don’t be like most people and do this in your head, we need to physically write down our goals in order for them to be real to us.
- What do you hope to experience?
- What do you want to accomplish?
- What do you want to change?
These big picture goals are your end goals, they should be realistic but still high enough for you to reach. Don’t put that you want to be partnered in 6 months, just put that you want to be partnered, or whatever your ultimate goal would be.
Now that we know what our Big Picture Goals are let’s break it down and set some smaller goals as stepping stones to it. Breaking these down also let’s us be much more specific and gives us more feeling of success along the way. What I like to do with smaller goals is to write down where I am at right now, so when I come back to this in 2 months, 6 months, or in 1 year, I know where I started and where I will be.
- How many followers do I have now?
- How many follower do I want in 6 months? in 1 year?
- How many viewers do I have in an average stream now?
- How many viewers do I want in an average stream in 6 months? in 1 year?
- How many total views do I have right now?
- How many total views do I want in 6 months? in 1 year?
- How many Twitter Followers do I have right now?
How many Twitter Followers do I want in 6 months? in 1 year?
What personal goals do I want to achieve in 6 months? in 1 year? (TreatStream? SpeedRun Time? Getting on a Stream Team?)
Now we have some goals set for 2016, if you want you can email or Private message me these goals and I’ll follow up with you in a few months to see how you are doing. Goals are always much more achievable when we tell others about them, they are able to help keep us on track and keep us motivated.
Until next time…
