Let's face it, we've all been there. You're so frustrated with something and you've wanted to quit streaming because you hit a wall, or a plateau, or you’re just overwhelmed. Don't worry you're not alone we've all been there, it's what separates beginner streamers from intermediate streamers from partnered streamers. It's how you deal with this that determines what kind of a streamer you want to be.
Like I said before we all have hit this point in our streaming life and if you haven't yet, you will soon. I tend to hit, what I like to call, ‘the wall’ every 3 months or so where I just plateau. It basically feels like I'm working really hard and getting no or negative results. I usually just push my feelings aside and work through it. However every 6 months or so I get really depressed, down and hard on myself to the point where I just want to throw in the towel and stop streaming. I have no idea why I get like this I just know that I do. I've talked to a few close streaming friends about this and they have said they've experienced this too.
So what do we do to get past this scary point? What do we do when we are so overwhelmed that we just want to give up? What works for me is to think of my 5 favorite people (1 for each finger), well 4 favorite people and my dog ;). Let me back up and explain this for you. I understand that a lot of streamers can have anxiety issues and/or take to heart what others say about them in the chat. They can put on a facade to pretend they don’t care but it’s all very taxing on our personal, emotional, and mental health. You can’t handle it all by yourself forever, so that’s where the 5 favorite people come in!
Instead of worrying about what the trolls say about you, or how you feel about how you’re doing in your stream remember how your favorite 5 people think about you. Just thinking about these supportive thoughts can be a major mental boost. When you are choosing your 5 favorite people make sure you pick people who’s opinion is absolutely essential to you, people you respect and value their judgement. They could be family, friends, a significant other, or even a childhood buddy. Not only do I use this method, but I’m typically always in communication with these 4 people (and my dog) and they are always there to help encourage me. It has made a HUGE change in my streaming life, and I know it can help you out as well.
I talked to one of my close streaming friends, MagikTheGamer from Australia, and he told me, “I faced a lot of challenges in 2015, ranging from moving to a home with a really bad internet connection (5MB down & 384 kbs up), to facing some pretty dark and challenging personal events which included anxiety and depression. All throughout these times, I contemplated about quitting streaming all together, on multiple occasions, as I thought that would just solve everything and make it all go away. The only reason why I am still streaming today has been due to my Magik Realmers (my stream community), because without them, I would not be here. Their constant love, support and encouragement has seen me through every challenge – some I am still facing now. In particular there are four people that I can always count on when the chips are down. They always give me a no bullshit response, even though I usually do not want to hear it, they ensure I hear it and hear it well. KittyMB All in all, when the time comes to deal with the situation, it is great to know that I can have the confidence to talk to them about my concerns and spend some time working out what can be done.”
So, don’t worry if you are feeling this way, it’s completely normal and most of us have been there. Everyone typically has a different way of handling this situation and this is just how I have dealt with it and currently am dealing with it. You are not alone, and together we can push through it. You will have your moment, you just need to be in the right place at the right time and your channel will explode!
Until next time…
